Diplomatic relations between the USSR and Yugoslavia were established on June 24, 1940 (subsequently, they were maintained between the Russian Federation and the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia, then between the Russian Federation and the state union of Serbia and Montenegro in full). On June 11, 2006, the Russian Foreign Ministry recognized that after the declaration of independence of Montenegro, the Republic of Serbia continues the international personality of the state union of Serbia and Montenegro.
A traditionally active political dialogue is maintained between Russia and Serbia. Summit meetings are held regularly.
The Russian-Serbian Intergovernmental Committee on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation and the Russian-Serbian Business Council are functioning effectively.
Military-technical cooperation is developing.
