Cooperation with Malaysia


Diplomatic relations between the countries were established on April 3, 1967 and the first trade agreement was signed at the same time.

On October 4, 1972, the Agreement on Economic and Technological Cooperation was signed.

A number of official visits were made at the level of heads of government and ministries. In May 1997, Malaysia’s King Tuanku Ja’afar paid an unofficial visit to St. Petersburg.

On August 5 and October 17, 2003, Russian President Vladimir Putin paid an official visit to Malaysia, and on June 18, 2007, Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi arrived in Moscow on a return visit. On October 10, 2007, under a contract with Rosoboronexport, the first Malaysian cosmonaut was sent to the International Space Station in accordance with the Russian-Malaysian intergovernmental agreement.

A significant event was the signing in 1999 of a Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of Russia and Malaysia on cooperation in defense, defense technologies and defense industry, as well as the establishment of a joint Russian-Malaysian intergovernmental commission.

Rosoboronexport is a regular exhibitor at the LIMA International Exhibition of Aerospace and Marine Equipment held in Langkawi every two years.

Rostec State Corporation has a representative office in Malaysia that ensures Rosoboronexport's interests.
