Cooperation with Nigeria


Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on November 25, 1960.

During an armed conflict in Nigeria (1967-1970), the USSR provided the federal government with political and military assistance in its fight against the self-proclaimed "Republic of Biafra".

Currently, an active political dialog is maintained between the countries. In March 2001, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo paid an official visit to Moscow. The Declaration on the Principles of Friendly Relations and Partnership was signed, which is a comprehensive program of interaction in bilateral and international formats.

In 1989, an agreement was signed on establishing the Intergovernmental Russian-Nigerian Mixed Commission on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, the first meeting of the commission was held in Moscow on December 7-8, 2004.

On February 20, 2007, the Agreement on Establishing the Russian-Nigerian Business Council and the Agreement between the Russia-Nigeria Business Council and the Nigeria-Russia Business Council on setting up the Nigerian-Russian Center for Cooperation in Trade, Industry, Agriculture, Health, Engineering and Information Technology were officially signed in Moscow.

On June 24, 2009, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev paid the first ever official visit to Nigeria.

Nigerian citizens undergo training at Russian universities.

Military-technical cooperation is carried out on the basis of an agreement signed in Moscow on March 6, 2001.

Rostec State Corporation has a representative office in Nigeria that ensures Rosoboronexport's interests.
