Cooperation with China

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on October 2, 1949.

The Soviet Union was the first foreign country to declare recognition of the PRC.

Modern Russian-Chinese relations are characterized by their  dynamic nature, a solid legal basis, an extensive organizational structure and active ties at all levels and are officially defined by the parties as a comprehensive equal trusted partnership and strategic interaction.

The main principles and directions of bilateral interaction are reflected in the Treaty on Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China of July 16, 2001

Russian-Chinese military-technical cooperation has gone through two stages in its evolution. Military ties between the USSR and the People's Republic of China were established back in 1949, but in 1969 they were suspended due to cooling of Soviet-Chinese relations.

From 1949 to 1969, a significant amount of weaponry and military equipment was supplied to China, technical assistance was provided in the development and retrofitting of military-industrial and military facilities, 650 licenses for the production of weapons and military equipment were transferred. In addition, thousands of Soviet specialists helped the Chinese military master this equipment, while thousands of Chinese specialists underwent training in the USSR.

Military-technical cooperation resumed in 1990. It is carried out between Russia and China on the basis of agreements concluded by the Governments of the two countries on various aspects of this cooperation. In addition, activities in this area are coordinated by the Russian-Chinese Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Military-Technical Cooperation, which meets alternately in Moscow and Beijing.

Multifaceted and mutually beneficial cooperation has been carried out with China since 1990. A large number of weapons and military equipment were supplied, including combat aircraft, helicopters and aircraft engines, air defense systems, warships, submarines, and ship-based systems.

Licenses to manufacture some weapons for the PLA Air Force and Ground Forces were transferred to China. A considerable number of research and development works were carried out in the interests of China to develop weapons and military equipment for all PLA services and branches. Technical assistance was provided to China in the construction (retrofitting) of military and industrial infrastructure facilities. Chinese specialists underwent training to operate and use the supplied weapons and military equipment. Services were provided to Chinese specialists in after-sales service of weapons and military equipment purchased by China.
