Until 1991, the USSR provided significant assistance in establishing an independent Malian state in almost all vital spheres. More than 30 intergovernmental agreements were signed. Large-scale geological exploration works were carried out in Mali, a cement factory, a stadium in Bamako, a vocational school and a hospital were built, the National Society for Exploration and Exploitation of National Resources of Mali was set up, the Kalana gold mining facility was established, an airfield in Gao was built. Six educational institutions, including an agricultural polytechnic institute, a higher administrative school, and a medical school were built free of charge. A total of over 10,000 Malian specialists were trained in Soviet/Russian universities. Military-technical cooperation was also carried out.
Military-technical cooperation is developing on the basis of an intergovernmental agreement signed in Moscow on March 25, 2003.
